Do I need to turn off the power to replace a ceiling fan?

Absolutely! It should be the first thing you do any time you work with electricity.

Shut off the power.

First, shut off the power to the room where the ceiling fan is located at the breaker box. This is for your safety so that you don’t get accidentally shocked.

Remove the fan blades.

Then, remove the blades. That will make it easier to move the entire unit without the ceiling fan blades getting in the way.Β

Unscrew the ceiling fan canopy.

Next, take off the ceiling fan canopy. Use a screwdriver to loosen the canopy’s screws. A drill isn’t a good idea for this because it is heavy and hard to get around the ceiling fan.Β

Then, slide down the canopy so you can see the wiring and where the ceiling fan is hanging from.

Disconnect the wiring.

Again, make sure that the power and the breaker is shut off before doing so. Loosen the wiring nuts, making note of which wire is the ground and the hot, etc.Β

Remove from the safety hanger (optional).

Then remove the fan from the safety hanger. Keep in mind that the ceiling fan unit will probably be heavy, so take your time with this step.

Remove the safety hanger

Remove the hanger.

You’ll need a screwdriver to do so to to unscrew the hanger from your ceiling. You may or may not need this moving forward.

However, most of the time, if you replace a ceiling fan with another ceiling fan, a hanger for the appropriate hanger for the style ceiling fan that you’re using or installing will come with the new ceiling fan.

Need a new fan?

I’m loving the sleek look and high powered speed of my new fan. Also, it’s nice and quiet.
